Lorraine Havelka, beloved mother, grandmother, and greatgrandmother passed peacefully at home with her family at 10:13 on Friday, May 10, 2013. Lorraine was born in 1930 as Lorraine Anna Horky, daughter of John and Henrietta Horky of Downers Grove, Illinois. She is survived by her brother John Horky. In 1952, she married Charles Havelka, who, after 53 years of marriage, died in 2005. Lorraine and Chuck leave four children and their families: Paula married to Jim Kovarik, Carl married to Julie Hudson, John married to Lynette Boland, and Charles, Jr. married to Sharon Dunn. Lorraine has eight grandchildren, Vivian, Samuel, Torri, Theresa, Travis and Megan Havelka (married to Ethan Corrado), and Miles and Damien Kovarik (married to zge Uygur). She has two greatgrandchildren, Asher and Derin Kovarik. Lorraine and Chuck met on the beach of Lake Michigan. Their happiest early memories are of the waves and wind and sand on the shores of the lake. They lived on Chuck's family grape farm in the early 50s. Chuck served in the Korean War and returned to a job at Sears. For the next twenty years, the Havelka family meandered about the Midwest (including New Buffalo, Michigan; Kankakee, Illinois; Okemos, Michigan; Minnetonka, Minnesota; and Naperville, Illinois). They settled in Naperville where Lorraine raised her four children and found time for two professional careers as a Registered Nurse and Real Estate Broker. She worked full time almost her entire life. Lorraine and Chuck retired to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas in 1995 where she continued to work full time in real estate. With Chuck's death, she came to Memphis in 2006 and lived near her family. During her time in Memphis, she found her passion making quilts and fabric art. She designed and created a line of quilted cards that she marketed during this last year of her life. All who knew Lorraine knew of her gifts as an unstoppable force, a font of wisdom, and a fountain of life. Lorraine's entire life was grounded in a strong old world ethic of cando/makedo, frugality and common sense. She was warm and happy as a mother; she was wise and practical as a person. She helped other mothers raise their children and helped all her friends with their troubles. Lorraine donated her body to science through the Genesis program. Family and friends will spread her ashes at a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. I also decided I wasn't going to live another several years with one family to each bedroom.
